2008 Screenshot comments & discussion

Please comment on the screenshots in this thread, we'd love to hear what you think!

Here are some temporary direct links, as our main server seems a bit swamped with the traffic.

Bookstore
Forest Trail
Sea plane
Sunset
Downed Plane

FAQ:

Q: What platform was used?
A: PC. The shots were taken in 1080p resolution (using 4xMSAA) and scaled down to 720p for web release. We are only releasing a few shots, and we wanted these to be usable for print purposes as well, therefore the higher resolution. The game looks very good on Xbox360 too but only runs in 720p.

Q: There's cool Depth-of-Field in the Cabin shot, is this real time?
A: That shot is from the Cinematic Trailer. We intend to use DOF effects to enhance storytelling in the in-game cinematics, but (at least at the moment ) it is done as an offline post process. Otherwise that image is fully rendered by the game engine.

Q: Who's that guy in shot X / what's the story in shot Y?
A: Sorry, no story reveals at this point...

I tried to post this a few minutes ago, but that bookstore screen is flat out stunning. The guy at the back, on the far right looks real! The rest are incredible too - but I haven't quite taken it all in yet.

im not seeing still a lot of shadows, i can understand that in the forest, if every plan can cast shadows and escpesially in itself.. that wourld require a monster pc but in the bookstore image i dont like at all the way the books look (no shadow) and as i can see everything else has only one shadow from the sun and nothing more.
As always the light it's the best in the game escpecially the flashlight and the daylight as it reflects in the forest, the see and everywhere else, im sure we are going to enjoy it.
In the mining car photo, the atmosphere looks so good. From better to worst my selection is: sunset (as always the best),mining car, downed plane, seaplane, trailer photo, bookstore

Since a High-End PC is much faster than any Xbox360 today and the difference is constantly growing, will it look similar or is the PC graphics on a different level?

i don't think we are going to see a lot of changes in xbox360 for marketing reasons. If everybody see that on the pc runs way better then why buy it on 360? i really hope im wrong in that

This shot is really nice, i really like the slight bloom effect.
The autumn vegetation outside is good, although, and correct me if I'm wrong, you guys still don't have subsurface scattering in the leaves, do you? Because the shadows on the vegetation look a bit dark.

http://download.remedygames.com/scre...g_car_720p.jpg

This gotta be on of the best shot's I've seen so far, when It comes to creepy mood and eerie environment.
The fog is really well done, and the vegetation is lovely! I love all the texturing work on this screenshot!

Not really much to comment on this shot, apart from the low res leaf on the lower left corner.

Very nice job averall guys! I can't wait for this.

My only (nitpicky) question: In the bookstore shot, on the table in front of Alan, is that a copy of one of his books? If so, why does the binding seem to be on the wrong edge (right side instead of left)? Or am I missing something?

I agree that the guy behind Alan in the background looks amazingly real! Great shots!

That's a very good question.

Also, can anyone figure out what the title of Alan's book is? So close, yet not quite legible enough.

Hard to say if the sun is shining on those leaves (the bright ones) or through them. But I think if they had some kind of SSS working, it would be more noticable on the characters' skin. I can't really tell as I don't know how it's done/faked in realtime rendering (i.e. video game) situations. But it looks like there's some amazing texture & shader work going on with the clothes.

Really amazing screens. I especially like the forest screenshot. Really gives you the feeling of just how scary the game is going to feel at times. Running aorund in the middle of a forest with a flashlight as your only light source? That is going to shoot shivers down my spine for sure.

I'm pretty sure the book is called "Alan Wake". The bookstore had these posters on the wall that look exactly same as the one on the table and the one in the trailer (cardboard cut-out Wake).

But why is the book called Alan Wake? Yes... I know the game is based on this book he writed, but the only thing that is pretty weard is the books name. Seriously: If I would be Stephen King, would I write a book called Stephen King?

Finally. Have to say thanks Remedy, it was worth it.

Those new screenshots look stunning and the attention to detail is superb (I still cant believe the game is Open World, it is isnt it?) now all we need is a Release Date, although I cant see us getting that this year, though we do live in hope.

Im away to watch the trailer again.

Detailed environment (and not with lots of 2D stuff for once..), nice light & shadows effects.

The screenshots prove us the little missing emotion on Alan's face. (not bad.. but not very good too )

But well.. i valid this version as gold. Ready for release to get it under the tree for christmas

[The bookstore]:
* Looks good
* The books themselves (at least on the front desk) need more details if we're to claim the movie-like realism. He's a writer after all! Let's respect his profession
* The guy in the background on the right looks photo-realistic.

Other screens are OK, though Alan's look in the downed plane scene is a little bit awkward.

My favorites: The Bookstore and the Sea plane (that is still flying )

I think the title is anticlimactic - "Alan Wake" His book is visually very similar to the covers in the Bookstore screenshot.

Looking at some of the Stephen King books I've got here, his name appears much larger than the titles of the novels themselves. Otherwise... it's an autobiography?

Quote:

I agree - it's blury but I'm sure it's meant to be the same book. I meant the text underneath 'Alan Wake', which I assumed was the title. Thinking about it, it probably just says "A Psychological Action Thriller"

So Xbox 360 version is very good too but so good as Pc version?are the differences small that human eye canīt see their or theirs a big diferences?

Btw , 720p is geat for a console , on consoles is rare games ate 1080p !

So is Xbox version so good as that screens?i hope so.

Fix the animations and the human people on game , they are not bad but comparing with the scenary and Alan etc , they "suck"

The lighting is by far the best I've seen in any game to date. It's amazing.

In the book store...the book on the table looks like it's floating. There's no shadow to add depth. However...for the game, I doubt we'll be standing in the bookstore, looking at that book for the entire game...therefore...I do not care about that measily book that's floating. The rest of the screen and the others look spectacular. Great job guys! Remedy kicks all other game dev's asses!
